We stock a full range of skip sizes to suit every job — from small garden clear-outs to large commercial construction sites. Not sure which size? Call us for free advice.
The mini skip is the smallest skip we hire in Derby and the easiest to place. It fits on almost any driveway, so most customers don't need a council permit. It's ideal for a bathroom strip-out, a small garden tidy or clearing a single room, and a good choice for heavy waste like soil and rubble.
A 4 yard skip, sometimes called a midi skip, holds noticeably more than a mini skip but still fits on most driveways. It's a popular size for Derby homeowners clearing a garage or loft, and works well for garden landscaping and medium DIY jobs.
The 6 yard skip is the most popular size we hire in Derby. It's big enough for a full kitchen or bathroom refit, a garden makeover or a partial house clearance, without taking up too much room on the drive. If you're not sure which size to choose, this is usually the safe bet.
An 8 yard skip, often called a builder's skip, is the standard choice for full house clearances and larger renovations. It's widely used by tradespeople across Derby. It's larger than most driveways comfortably allow, so it often goes on the road with a council permit, which we arrange for you.
The 12 yard skip, also known as a maxi skip, is our largest size. It's designed for bulky, lighter waste from construction sites, commercial clear-outs and major renovations. It isn't suitable for heavy waste like soil or rubble, as it would be too heavy to lift when full.
The right skip depends on the job, how bulky the waste is and how heavy it is. Use the table below as a starting point. If you're between two sizes, it's usually cheaper to go one size up than to hire a second skip.
| Your job | Recommended size | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bathroom refit | Mini (3 yd) or 4 yard | Suite, tiles and plasterboard from one room |
| Kitchen refit | 6 yard | Old units and worktops take up a lot of space |
| Garage or loft clear-out | 4 or 6 yard | Depends how full it is — mostly light, bulky items |
| Garden tidy | Mini or 4 yard | Green waste and small amounts of soil |
| Patio or driveway removal | Mini or 4 yard | Heavy waste — smaller skips are safer to lift |
| House clearance | 8 yard | Furniture and household waste from a whole home |
| Building or renovation work | 8 or 12 yard | Mixed construction waste over several weeks |
Bag counts are approximate and assume standard black bin bags. Bulky items like sofas and wardrobes take up more space than their weight suggests, so break them down where you can.
Soil, rubble, bricks and concrete are much heavier than household waste, and a large skip full of them can be too heavy for the lorry to lift. For heavy waste, a mini or 4 yard skip is usually the best choice. Clean soil and rubble on its own is also our lowest rate — see our Derby skip hire prices for details.
